Imagery and our web crawler

If you have found AgedCareCompassBot in your server logs, or we have emailed you about a photograph, this page explains what we do and how to stop us.

Who we are

Aged Care Compass is run by Automata AI, a Sydney consultancy. ABN 57 697 128 180, Level 13, 477 Pitt Street, Sydney NSW 2000. You can reach a person at admin@automataai.com.au.

The directory itself is built from Australian government open data — the department’s service list, Star Ratings, and the Aged Care Quality and Safety Commission’s registration records. Every figure on a listing shows where it came from and when.

What the crawler does

It identifies itself on every request. The full user agent is AgedCareCompassBot/0.1 followed by a link to this page and the address above, so you can match it in a log line and reply to a human.

  • It reads robots.txt before anything else and obeys it.
  • It makes at most one request per second to your site, and it honours a Crawl-delay if you declare one.
  • It reads a small number of pages — your home page, your sitemap, and the pages for homes that appear in our directory.
  • It never fills in a form, never logs in, and never touches anything behind one.

For selected providers, it also downloads photographs on the pages for residential homes. The next section explains why and what we do with them.

Photographs we have copied

We copied provider photographs before asking.

On 18 September 2026 we copied photographs from Catholic Healthcare’s pages for its residential homes. We have since collected photographs from other providers’ own residential-home galleries, including RSL LifeCare. We did this before asking for permission, and we intend to ask. Each published photograph is credited to the provider whose page it came from, with a link to that page and the date we copied it. Published photographs may include people. If you want any photograph removed, see Permission and removal below.

For providers outside this photo collection, a separate crawler does not download or keep your photographs. It looks at an image only long enough to measure it — its dimensions, its file size, and a mathematical fingerprint that tells us whether the same picture appears on many of your pages. Then it discards it. Nothing of the image itself is written to disk or kept anywhere, so if you tell us to stop there is nothing of yours for us to delete.

We also do not copy your written descriptions. Facts about a home — that it has a dementia-specific wing, or staff who speak Cantonese — may end up on your listing, attributed to your website with the date we read it. The words you used to describe them stay yours.

We do not crawl myagedcare.gov.au, health.gov.au or the Aged Care Quality and Safety Commission. Those are manual downloads, and the crawler refuses outright rather than skipping quietly if it is ever pointed at one.

How to stop us

Add this to your robots.txt and we will stop on the next run, with no need to contact us:

User-agent: AgedCareCompassBot
Disallow: /

If you would rather just tell us, email admin@automataai.com.au and we will add your domain to our exclusion list. Either way you do not need to explain why.

Permission and removal

A provider photograph appears here only after we have reviewed and selected it from a residential home gallery. We record its source and the date we copied it, and show both beside the photograph. We may also publish photographs supplied with permission or taken by us; those carry their own credit and permission record.

If you would like a photograph removed, email admin@automataai.com.au. We will acknowledge within one business day and take it out of the next build of the site, normally within five business days. We say “next build” rather than “immediately” because this is a static site: removing an image is a code change and a redeploy, not a switch. You do not need to give a reason and we will not argue about it.

Your listing does not depend on any of this

Your homes are listed because they appear in Australian government records, and that does not change whether you send us a photograph, block our crawler, or never reply. We do not charge for a listing, we do not rank paying providers above others, and we do not sell leads. Results are ordered alphabetically by suburb.

If something on your listing is wrong, tell us at admin@automataai.com.au. Where the error is ours we will correct it. Where it comes from the government source we will show you which record it came from, so you can have it corrected where it will also fix everyone else’s copy.
